Swine Flu could cause a shortage of Childrens Hospital Beds this year

Britain could suffer a shortage of intensive care beds for children with swine flu if there is a surge of cases this winter, researchers have warned.

More than half of admissions to paediatric intensive care units are unplanned and problems with breathing accounts for around one in four cases.

As winter unfolds, the combination of swine flu and normal respiratory infections could lead to a short of beds, according to a study published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.

The analysis by the University of Cambridge, used a model based on 30 per cent of the population contracting swine flu, and a paediatric intensive care bed figure of 303 across the UK.
